Assistant Solicitor

Description

Do you have experience of providing MSPs with high quality legal advice? We are seeking an Assistant Solicitor to sit within our clients’ Legislation, Strategy and Constitution Team. Based in Edinburgh, this Assistant Solicitor role with end on 31st March 2022.

Duties:

· You will prepare legal briefing for Committees on subordinate legislation and the delegation of powers to legislate, and contribute to Committee reports
· You will provide advice to the Presiding Officer on the legislative competence of Bills, supporting him to fulfil his statutory role to inform Parliament as part of the legislative process
· You will work with colleagues to promote constructive relationships with other Parliaments and the Scottish Government to strengthen democratic accountability in the emerging constitutional landscape
· You will provide MSPs with high quality legal advice to support them in scrutinising legislation to ensure that it is of good quality, effective and accessible

Essential:

· Excellent legal analytical skills with a high standard of accuracy and attention to detail in your own work and the ability to apply this to resolve competing arguments and provide solutions
· A keen interest in acquiring specialist expertise and be comfortable in mastering new disciplines quickly. Previous experience of statutory interpretation and giving advice on legislation is desirable
· You will demonstrate awareness of the political background and how to provide impartial advice to MSPs and colleagues within a high-profile environment
